Free tile calculator

Square footage and tile box calculator

Enter each area you plan to tile. You get an approximate tile quantity in square feet and, if you add box coverage, whole boxes. This is not an installation price, and no email is needed.

How to measure

  1. Measure each flat, rectangular surface separately: length and width for floors, height and width for walls.
  2. Shower niches, curbs, benches and returns each need their own rectangular measurement. Add them as separate areas.
  3. Use feet or inches for each area. Decimals are fine, for example 7.5. Changing units does not convert existing measurements.
  4. Leave a measured area out if it will not be tiled, such as a tub or a built in vanity.

Extra material allowance

Extra material covers cuts, breakage and layout waste. The starting 10 percent is a planning allowance, not a universal recommendation. Diagonal layouts, large format tile and busy patterns often need more. You can set any value from 0 to 50.

Same product only

All areas you enter are combined into one box count, so they must use the same tile product. If you are using different products, run the calculator once for each. This tool counts tile only. It does not calculate mortar, grout or waterproofing. Confirm every quantity before ordering.

Tile calculator questions

Does this calculator estimate installation costs?

No. It estimates tile area and material quantity only. Removal, surface preparation, tile selection, layout, access, and installation details need a separate project review.

How much extra tile should I allow?

The calculator starts with a 10 percent planning allowance, which you can change. It is not a recommendation for every project. Cuts, patterns, room shape, breakage, tile variation, and spare material needs affect the allowance. Confirm quantities with your installer before ordering.

Can I combine rooms, backsplashes, and shower walls?

You can measure multiple rectangular floor or wall areas. Combine them for box counts only when they use the same tile product and box coverage. Calculate different products separately. Niches, benches, curbs, and returns need their own measurements.

Where do I find coverage per box?

Use the square foot coverage printed on the manufacturer's carton or product listing. Enter square feet per box, not the number of pieces. The calculator rounds the required box quantity up to whole boxes.

Does this include grout, mortar, or waterproofing?

No. Those quantities depend on product instructions, substrate conditions, tile dimensions, joint dimensions, and the chosen assembly. A square foot total alone is not a complete material list.
